What is Gifted in NC?
Academically or intellectually gifted students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
My Philosophy of Giftedness
As an educator of 15 years, I have seen many students come through my classroom door. I believe that a child can be gifted in one or many ways (reading, math, science, musically, athletically...). It is my job as an educator to be aware of characteristics that point towards a child showing potential of giftedness. Giftedness comes in all types of students...all races, all cultures. Identifying giftedness and providing appropriate services to enrich the current knowledge base of the gifted child is a rewarding experience! I work to mold minds of children every day and shape them to become productive and talented individuals who will enhance our society in the future.
The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.
